Battle Report
The following is an After Action Report from Fall In! 2003. The second game was better than the first so I will tell you about that one. I ran two games back to back (scenerios of the same game) but modified the second to "require" the Roman Auxilia Cavalry to attack where they did as described below. It was much better for all players. The first game was hampered by only 3 players. The second had all 8 that I needed.

The Cause
Caesar representing Rome and her Gallic Allies ordered the Helvetti not to leave their homes and not to march on to new lands. the Helvetti ignored the desires of Caesar, Rome and their Gallic Allies. Caesar was forced to march his forces against the Helvetti to put a stop their march into the territories of Rome's Gallic Allies.

The Initial Moves
Caesar sent forward Legio X. The Xth encountered the Helvetti forces strung out along three roads. A portion of the Helvetti lead elements had already crossed a bridge over a rain swollen river. The Xth advanced on the advance elements and engaged them first with Allies auxillia. The Helvetti and the Roman auxilia forces became involved in heavy battle. Initially the Helvetti made progress and forced the Roman auxilia back. However, help was on the way. The Xth Legion's cohorts were soon to arrive on the field. As these cohorts advanced to the battle the Roman Auxilia Cavalry moved on the flanks of the Helvetti.

The Initial Action
The Roman auxilia cavalry attacked into the left flank of the Helvetti forces on the opposite side of the river. Their initial attacks were successful slowing down the advance of the main Helvetti army. To counter this move Helvetti forces were dispatched from three columns and ultimately destroyed the auxilia cavalry with their infantry. This was a deadly contest of Helvetti foot against auxilia cavalry, a very heated combat. The badly outnumbered auxilia cavalry, having done their best, now fled the field or died with their Roman S.O.C. in a final pitched battle wherein they were surrounded by the Helvetti.

The Secondary Moves and Action
As the first action was being fought a new battle began with other Auxilia Roman Heavy Cavalry attacking the left flank of the Helvetti already across the river. Initially th advance parties of Helvetti repulsed the Auxilia Roman Heavy Cavalry. In the end the Roman Auxilia Heavy Cavalry triumphed. Now the Auxilia Roman Heavy Cavalry were free to link up with the Xth Legion. Both began moving forward through their own auxilia skirmishers to destroy the remaining Helvetti elements that had crossed the river.

The End of the Action
As the sun set on the day's battle the Helvetti that had crossed the river were in rout, the Helvetti yet to cross the river had to decide to force a second crossing at the bridge and then attack the Xth or to await the Xth's crossing. Although Caesar had decisively beat the Helvetti advance forces, the enemy's main army still had a great deal of fight left and plenty more warriors remaining yet to be comitted.
The victory would hang in the balance as both armies decided their next tactic. But, this was for another day.
Well, there you have it Phil. I hope that gives you an idea of the day for me.
