Classical Hack Ancient Warfare

Creating A Game Table

Set Up
by Philip J. Viverito

A fun thing to do which I enjoy is the basic set-up of a gaming table. Several years ago I took these photos of a table I set up to do a Celtic Roman game at Historicon. Classical Hack is a game system that is terrrian intensive. Each player can select up to 8 pieces each. I personally like more but a total of 16 pieces makes for a real looking battle field. Let me show you how I do this.

To begin with you require a flat table or surface. This is always available at gaming conventions like Cold Wars or Historicon to name just two. So I begin with a pair of tables. Push them together. Wih this done you want to next place your hills which form the required ground swells which makes a the earth not a flat place but an uneven playing field for your miniatures. The hills here will be covered with a cloth. I buy tons of cloth when I can find it at a dollar a yard.

I should mention that I learned this method from Dave Bonk and Chris Hughes at Siege of Augusta 1994. The trip was well worth it and I learned a lot. Now you are ready to add the cloth. As you can see I like to use light brown or tan cloth. In this case a fine felour. Go to the next link.
