Ending Thoughts

I always explain that my voice lasts only so long and that I do not explain things after turn three. If they don’t get it by turn three they never will. This might sound rude but it does predetermine the flow of the game before it begins. Is this rude? No it’s being honest. Whatever system you use, it must be simple enough that the players are playing by turn three unassisted. No one wants to appear dumb after turn three so for the most part players usually partner up and the game rolls on. Explaining this seems to predetermine the activity. Players will take the heel if you let them. Why? Because players are usually pretty smart. Give them credit for having brains and they won’t let you down.

With Classical Hack it is paramount to explain first the Casualty Calculation Matrix. Then go through the turn sequence. It is most unusual and not always popular. It does work. Allow fifteen minutes at the most for this. You will find that the game mechanics in relation to the set up will winds up the game with enough force that it runs itself. Player do get when given a chance.

A point is not to let conversations over power the game. Player like to reminisce about other games they have played in. This will distract other players. So know what people are talking about during the game so this doesn’t happen.

Do not argue about points; adjudicate and be firm. I like to tell people that I’ll gladly explain or discuss their interpretation after the game. The firmness you present will leave you in control of the game.

Ajudicate with the D-6 in order to resolve things quickly. People will understand.

A game should not exceed three hours. For special big event games take a break at about the half way point for games exceeding three hours.

Finally remember you are gaming to get away from work and other home based issues. This is our hobby. This is for fun. While I truly appreciate the evocatii who put on Classical Hack games they should remember that an evocati is a volunteer. I do not ant to loose any evocatii to burn out. While I may invoke your help I want you to know you are valued. There is no better gratification I can get than you putting on a game using my game system. So do what you can and when you can. You help even by just participating in games I put on or someone else does by simply playing. Your knowledge will speed up play and help to create a good gaming experience.I know you have a life too. I will never think less of anyone who tries something different or just needs a break.

Worry about the details when you are playing with friends at home not at a convention. I will be running some seminars for the Classical Hack Yahoo Group Members if they they wish to gather at Historicon.
