Caesar's Legions The Centurionsby Philip J. Viverito ![]() With the creation of my new legions I had several things to consider besides just the order issues-loose or close, close or loose and exchanging the two. I decided to use several different figures to show commanders of the legions-the centurions. For the first line I use the typical ear to ear crested centurion style helmet in various colors. With the first two lines I usually used this figure for the lead centurions. Also in the first two lines I use legionary standards along with this figure. These are not the eagle standards. For the third line I use a tribune style helmeted figure with the legion's eagle and a horn player. Here are the types of stands I use for command. The legion's eagle standard should be placed in the last line. Actually the standards would be in the rear rank of any unit that is more than one rank deep. Thus we have the men before the standards called antesignani. There is some speculation as to who the antesignani really were and what they did. But that is another subject all together. The important thing is that the legions and cohorts made every attempt to protect their standards in order to avoid capture. |
