The 2nd Punic War - page 7 of 7 Roman Clarifications & IllustrationsLet me illustrate how Classical Hack works in relation to gaming. In Classical Hack you game with large detachments or armies. Here we will deal with a Roman army. For Romans you can have a full consular army (2 legions) half of them being Roman B class and the other half Roman C class units. Showing senior and junior designations by experience. I lean toward this. Or they could all be B class or all C class. The triarii should be alteast one class higher than the highest class of Roman princeps. In this period legions held numerical designations. Legions 1 to 4 would be assigned to the two consuls. Anything above that would be assigned to duties like garrisoning a province or regional area. When we say one legion we really understand this to mean a Roman legion and a Latin legion. What morale class should each legion be? The first legion of each consular might have all B Class hastati and princeps. Or a player might want have all the hastati C Class and the princeps BClass. The triarii should be A Class. The Velites should be B Class for legion 1 in legion 2 they should be C or L class. The second consular legion could be all C Class excluding the triarii who should be B Class. The Extraordinarii should be C or B class. Roman cavalry should be C class. Players can use any mix of classes but only as whole units.
Here is a good illustration on how to set up and PLAY a Republican Roman Army. The lines can be in two ranks of you wish. Remember Romans and their Latin Allies can be placed in either close or loose order. In fact you can even exchange them into a different order during the movement phase of any turn in order to deal with tactical situations. No other set of rules permits you to do this. It does take extra figures as you must exchange figure for figure. |
