Caesar's Gallic Wars - page 3 of 4 A Word About CommandersIn the organization of the Roman military system, the Romans placed a governor or imperator over an expeditionary force. Beneath this commander were subordinate legionary subordinate commanders called legati or legates. Other subordinate commanders were perfects of the cavalry and quaestors. These might command the auxilia or special detatchments. I have shown them as individuals without guards. So, as Romans, a player might have a number of subordinate commanders in addition to the overall commander. A Word to Roman CommandersRoman players are warned to fight their Roman units like Romans. To place all your units side-by-side is to invite disaster. Romans must utilize their main strength and that is by placing them in lines one behind the other. While Romans might fight in acies or single line, this is quite out of the ordinary with the usual method being in at least two lines. |
