Cold Wars 2009: Camlann - page 2 of 8 Two Demo Games Here are a few photographs from Cold Wars 2009 where I introduced Hack In The Dark: Warfare in the Dark Ages 250 A.D. to 1000 A.D. The basic idea was this in the demos; Arthur has returned from the continent with what is left of his army. Modred has rebelled and they have met at the controversial place called Camlann in a fight to the death battle for control of Britain.
In the battle Arthur has deployed along a ridge line. On his right is a path with woods on each side. A true death trap with Arthur's Equites in ambush on each side of the path. At the end of the path are a unit of Equites (knights) and a legion (1000 men) blocking the way for an enemy wishing to turn Arthur's right flank. The Jutes, one part of Mordred's army, would attempt to gain Arthur's flank to little avail as it turned out.
Arthur having lost so many men in Brittany has to use terrain to his advantage as he is radically out numbered. Arthur with the mian battle line of four legions and some cavalry cover the ridge line. A reserve hidden from site is directly behind him in a depression. This last reserve never say combat in either of the two games as Arthur's Untrained Levy foot soldiers held their own against all enemies to their front.
On Arthur's left was a smaller force of cavalry and infantry also on a second arm of the ridge line. These too would hold in the first game but in the second game the enemy before them were bought off and turned on Mordred! This proved Mordred's undoing and he lost the second demo battle. In this the first battle however, Mordred and Arthur challnged each other and Mordred killed Arthur thus winning the day for the forces of evil.
As always it is interaction of the participatants and visitors that makes miniature gaming fun. Certainly without participants such events would not be remembered muchless so execiting. Such interaction makes it all worth while! Follow the links below for the photos which you can download and view. |
