Classical Hack Ancient Warfare

Cold Wars 1998

by Phil Viverito

[Allan]
Allan Fleming directs players in a Classical Hack Carthaginian Period game. In this game the Romans were destroyed. In game two played later in the day the Carthaginians changed sides-the players that is. Seeing the Roman method of exchanging lines convinced them that the Romans can win in Classical Hack when they are played historically. In game two the Romans won hands down.

[Grant]
Grant Forsythe runs through modifiers as Dan pushes lead across the battle field. Roman and Carthaginians are going at it in this scenario game which used Grant's modified Classical Hack Options. Instead of using percentiles Grant converted the system to a single d-10 die for morale and casualty calculation. I really like what he has come up with and all of it can be found in Classical Hack Scenarios. On the left is Allan Fleming and on the right (seated) is Francis Reed. The Romans really beat up on the Carthaginians. They used the Roman Break Back rule to the letter.

[Dan]
Dan B. helped Dennis of "On Military Matters" with demo games to promote "Holy Hack: Hacking By The Book" - Biblical Warfare. It was an excellent method to utilize business matters with pleasure.

[Dan and Grant]
Dan explains his interpretations of Holy Hack to Grant Forsythe. Grant said Dan made a super gamemaster. Grant also commented that Dan gave him many new perspectives of the Hack system. I too find this to be true in many of the demo games I put on as players always come up with new and usually valid comments. That's something a computer game will not give players-a point of view.
