Southern Front 1998
by Phil Viverito
Here are some shots from one of my favorite cons: Southern Front. Southern Front proves that a convention does not have to be big to be good. It is the quality of the players, and not the quantity, that makes a convention work.
Grant Forsyth is pictured here explaining important aspects of Classical Warfare in Classical Hackese - Punic war period. Grant can still distinguish which units are which even though they are 15mm figures. I have turned to 25mm as my eyes are not as sharp. I hate having people tell me "You can't charge that unit's rear! They're your own men!" This game was one of five Classical Hack and Knight Hack games put on at Southern Front '98.
Here Joe (right) and, I think, Roger (left) fight it out under the walls of a Gallic hill fort. This was also at Southern Front '98. The Romans have to defend their works and fight off a relieving force of Gauls. Unless I recall incorrectly, the Romans pulled a draw but casualties forced them back to their main camp. Desparate Gallic charges from the fort destroyed many of the Roman machinae (artillery). They were able to break into the Roman works and the Romans had to bring up more cohorts from the main camp to stop them. Note the unit markers on the rear stands.
