Fall In! 2005 - page 4 of 4 The HousingThere were several different types of houses used by the Norse. Here is a small humble house. It is very similar to those used many years later in America at both the Plymouth and Jamestown Colonies. These were small and could represent either actual individual homes, work shops or storage buildings. As in most Norse buildings of this type there was a raised door on just one side and near the corner of the structure. Settlements would have differenet types of houses and buildings each with differenet purposes. They were unsophisticated affairs in general being either wattle and daub or wood frame. The white building in the foreground is a less common wattle and dab building. There were not a lot of windows in Viking houses as you can see. Not shown here are the wicker fences for gardens and animal pens. Another feature left off are the plank walk ways which run between each house. Wood was a material that was abundant to the Norse geography. These will be included in the LA setup.
Settlements of this type as you can see were predominately wood. Houses could be big or small, framed or wattle and daub. There were four types of roofing materials (I have shown only three); thatching, shingles or planking. With frame houses the corners of each would have edging to protect the cutends of the wood corners. To release smoke from interior fires pits the peaks would have opennings at their tops. All of the materials used are manuafactured by Percision Products. |
