Vikings at Hedeby

The defenders of the town wall would roll a D-10 each turn for each unit as they came within a certain distance of the walls and towers. Any even number would activate each unit inside the town as the enemy units got near.

Here the assaulting units are in different formations. The front unit is pushing a wagon of incinduaries. For a degree of protection one unit is in shield wall. The ground was a simple crushed velour cloth.
