Alesia: 52 B.C. - page 10 of 12 Alesia: 52 B.C. Siege Works Cavalry Camp Caesar knowing that an army of relief was coming hoped to make best use of all of his army. Along the western side of his siege works he established and had built cavalry camps and infantry camps. These were placed outside the general works backed against or in areas when the works were interrupted by terrain. Most of these western camps were placed at intervals along the west and south lines. Caesar's head quarters were in the south. In the north there were several camps. Two legions were quartered here. I could use my winter camp but I want to keep the scenario workable in regard to size. So below is just one of the cavalry camps. It is a simple affair being built on a low hill in the plain (this plain stretched about three miles in length). It has a ditch, a single gate with tower, brambles and a pale wall with brambles attached to the pales. Inside are tents. This will be placed between the northern works and the western works. Camps like this filled gaps between the lines where the terrain made continuous works impossible. Just click on the photo to make it larger. Then hit the return or back button.
