Alesia: 52 B.C. - page 4 of 12 Alesia The camp proved to be a very important part of the fight for Alesia. The Gauls had assembled so many men that they had to adding a camp area and a new stone and log wall. In the initial battles with Caesar the Gauls flead back to the town but Vercingetrix, the leader of the Gauls, ordered the town gates closed forcing the retreating Gauls to seek shelter in fortified camp rather than the town. The town of Alesia sat on a high impregnable platuea which Caesar knew would be next to impossible to storm. So Caesar decided on a siege which would require building a surrounding wall a round Alesia. To defend against a a Gallic relief force he also had to build another set of fortifications to guard the back of the first. These I will be finishing shorting and will post photos when I am done.
