The Battle

In the scenario the basic concept was for the Saxons to mass their forces and to assault the first the bailey. They had a siege tower,ladders, stones, earth and tree branches with which to fill in the ditch. With this done they wuld roll forward the siege tower.

The Saxons would move units of archers forward to make the ramparts a beaten area. The Norman defenders would have a hard time of it trying to out shoot the numerically superior Saxons. As they did so work parties would move forward.

As the Saxons worked their way toward the castle the Normans took action. First a call for help had been made so the Normans expected to see help from the Duke.

It was a common for the besieged to sortie out of their stronghold. To buy time or even to drive the attackers off the garison might suprise the enemy with a sallie made from secret exits or by making a gap in their own walls. The idea was to go out and encircle or flank the attackers.
