Classical Hack Ancient Warfare

Saxon Shore Fort Cold Wars 2008 A.D. - page 4 of 4

One of my favorite recent films is King Arthur. The film begins with an attack on a convoy. Arthur and his knights save the convoy. I thought that the wagon looked too sophisticated for the period. After some research I found that it was very accurate. There were several types of wagons or carriages used throughout Roman history. The most common military type was similar to more modern nineteenth century American wagons. These were four and two wheeled. They could have hoops over the box of the wagon. The hoops could support leather or canvas covers to protect the contents of the wagon. The driver sat on a wood bench seat. The wagons had a hand break system too. Other wagons were more sophisticated. These had crafted wood housings with doors and windows. In all other respects they were identical to covered wagons. The last two views in the bottom row is that of a gate being defended and attacked. The last image is of a fire wagon being pushed into the gate to burn it. Those Old Glory Viking rowing figures are great for special things like drivers and men pushing with their backs.

Spcial thanks for the excellent materials I used produced by John Hutt of Precision Products
