The Last Castro The Celtiberians 147 B.C.
by Philip J. viverito

The Basic Set-up Part One

At Hisotricon 2008 I participated in Richard Wareings Wars of Portugal. I elected to do a Roman Celtiberian (a mixed culture existing in Spain and Portuagal, then called Lucitania in the Classical Period) game scenario called the Last Castro. A castro is another name for what we would call a Celtic hillfort. So here is what I did. I resurrected my Celtic hillfort and placed it on the Celtiberian side of the board in a corner area. The castro had a fortified hill topped with typical Celtic walls. There was one entrance which was guarded by a walled gate. Beneath the gate area was a market place. To reach the fortified gate the enemy would have to pass through a natural stone formation something like a pass or ravine. The set-p is pretty simple and fast to set-up.

Below is the over all view of the battlefield. On the right is the castro and a forest. In the center are some low hills I made using a mold which I filled with hydrocal; light weight plaster of paris. Then on the left another forest and things I like to give players for playing. I also use this area as a place where casualties can be placed during the game. Yes in the fine Roman tradition if you do not give your love and appreciation freely I will try and buy it with free information, mugs and rules.
