Classical Hack Ancient Warfare

Ral Partha Hoplites

Lead Review
by Phil Viverito

Gamers like figures for many different reasons. These reasons whatever they are demonstrate that gamers are selective in their decision when it comes time to assemble that perfect army. Here we will deal with the Hoplite period which has always been one of my favorite periods and the Ral Partha Hoplites one of my favorite ranges. Classical Hack players will find army organization for the hoplite armies for Period One on page 41 of Classical Hack.

Few ranges of figures have stood the test of time as well as the Ral Partha Hoplite Range. They are true 25's. Each figure in the range is well sculpted and can be used as straight up units with each figure being the same or with a mix of figures from the range to give a certain uniqueness to each unit. I like to have all the figures in the unit be the same with only one or two exceptions. Imagine all the men in perfect order and then in the middle or on the end one man is dressed different or is in a different pose! This makes for the real look.

I have used my Ral Partha Hoplite Greeks at home and for demos at Cold Wars and Historicon and they have served me well. They are nice looking and are high quality. Next we will look at their opponents the Persians. Until then check our link to Ral Partha or Brookhurst as a source. Also Ral Partha has a very good on line photographic archive with its catalog. Need to do some research on the period check out Grandiosity Books and On Military Matters. Need more details give them a call, write by snail mail or e-mail them.

It should be noted that the original observations made here were my own and are made strictly from my initial notes and are like myself are occasionally slanted. We have included recent comments so kindly sent in to us by Mr. Steve Phenow in brackets; editor of "The Strategos Newsletter". If nothing else we want Classical Hack to be inclusive both as a game system and a historical outlet of thought. Many thanks to him for his well couched and scholarly comments. We thank him also for being inclusive and not exclusive! These historical notes will be posted on a forth coming page now under construction.

LMW Works would like to thank Jack Hasselbrock at Ral Partha for letting us use his pictures for this section of our page.
