The Achaeans

[figure]

The Greeks or Achaeans as a whole are considered to be composed of two main peoples, the Achaioi and the Danaoi. I have listed the number of ships considering that it seems logical that each ship could carry the maximum of 50 men. This number could have been as few as 20 or as many as 120 men. For figure representation I have elected to use a fire scale of 1:50 for both Trojans and Achaeans. Senior leaders count as Heroes and are represented by a chariot model with 6 dismounts. Junior leaders are represened in the same manner. For each chariot there should be a unit of spearmen, a unit of shooters with bow, sling or javelin. The contingents are each under a single commander unless otherwise stated. The contingents can have multiple commands. Overall command seems to have been given to Agamemnon on account of his being the single mostpowerful ruler.

Based on world population of about 45 million people and then the largest estimated size of a town or city at the time being about 7500 people I estimated that if a boat has 50 men each (excluding one case which states 120 men) I simply figured that half the number on each boat would be serving men or retainers of a generally non-military nature. Consequently if a leader brought 2000 men I count only half of these being of a fighting stature. Thus a contingent of 2000 men becomes 1000 fighting men. I just cut all the contingent numbers in half. For places that sent fewer than 1000 men I have retained that number without any computations.

The Achaean contingents (29), some 31,750 fighting men or 635 figures excluding heroes and junior leaders being some 40 heroes and junior leaders are listed in the next section.
