The Trojan Contingents

Troy

[horse]

The list of Trojan allies in Book II of the Iliad may wellcome from a Mycenaean source because it contains less detail than the 'Catalogue of Ships'.The catalogue of Trojans is vague and is obviously ill informed about the regions of Anatolia. It probably dates to circa 1000 BC. A portion of the allies might be identified with West Anatolian states based on Hittite records.

Here I have estimated town and city sizes at 7500 people. One third of this number might be able to bear arms. For Troy I have estimated maximum figures as it should have been the largest town. The total number of men would be about 20300 fighting men or 406 figures.

For organization there are some 27 heroes and 1 Specialist shooter. I left the Amazons completely off the list. Each hero should be mounted as a single chariot model with 6 dismounts. Junior leaders should be mounted like the heroes. For each chariot model there should be a shield wall unit of spearmen. I like to use units of 12, 16 or 24 figure units. Any remaining figures allowed to a particular ethnic group should be used as archers, slingers and javelins.

The contingents are listed in the next section having some 16 different contingents.
