That Darn Turn Sequence!

Different for the sake of difference, or different for a reason?
by Phil Viverito

This article is written to clarify the nodes or events (in turn sequence) as set down in Classical Hack. Of all things in the rules, this seems to be the one thing people discuss. Some players like it and others don't. The one true method of handling this issue - if it is indeed an issue - is by using it as is or modifying it it to your interpretation.

Here's a real surprise: I like it. Why use it as is? Simply put, it works. It is a built-in part of the system that makes the system as a whole work. When I first started playing WRG 3, likewise with each succeeding edition I had a difficult time with everything. Then 7th Edition came along. The 7th Edition was an eye-opener for me. Because it was so clearly written? No not that. Because it is or was one of the best systems out there? Perhaps in part for that time. No it was that I had matured-some say "manured" but I think matured. How so? Well I decided that after 6th there was life. Heck I had lost hundreds of cohorts of Romans to the to those terrible cataphracts in 6th. So when 7th came along I decided to take my time. I loved doing up killer lists that proved to be nothing of the sort in any edition. I was determined to build on enjoyment of lists and then on grasping the new edition's changes. I took everything slowly.

My maturity had fully bloomed. I achieved this by test playing with friends. As with all new systems we stumbled along. Rather than arguing each point as we stumbled through we played through and worried about mistakes or misinterpretations in the post-game talk. It worked. We played and played and played. With each game we got better and better at it. While my best on the tournament circuit was never good enough, I still played through! I had fun learning and not looking back. It was the constant updates that finally drove me away, not the rules or even the opponents I faced. You know, part of my self-realization was that I'm not a good tournament player. That's ok, too.

My point is this. When you play a new or different system and we all do at one time or another just play through! Eventually you will see the merits of the rules and the nuances there in. I am not saying you will always be happy but give'em a chance and I know you will be surprised.

In Classical Hack, testers will find a most unusual turn sequence. It is different but not for the sake of difference. Instead, it is how we, the authors, thought a classical battle should be segmented for play. It suits me fine. Play it without looking back. Try the thing on!
