Alesia: 52 B.C. - page 6 of 12 Alesia: 52 B.C. Siege Works Let's start in the area furthest from the most critical point of the relieving army of Gauls. This would be in the east by the Gallic camp beneath the town walls. This is to the right on the map. Here there was little activity. The main siege works sat a top the hill that ran from Alesia's hill top toward the east. Here Caesar built strong works using every device at his engineers' command. First there is the stimuli. Spikes running along before the ditch. In regard to ditches I have satisfied myself with one ditch which in reality represents one or more. This is a game after all and space is limited. Behind the stimuli and ditch is the Roman walls. The wall or parapet rested on top of an earthen bank made from the dirt taken from the ditch. Turf blocks were cut to make bricks. These turf bricks acted as a facing for the walls. On top of this earthen embankment or wall were staked driven into the bank. Attached to the stakes were wicker work. Sometimes with crenelations sometimes only waste high. Just click on the photo to make it larger. Then hit the return or back button.
In these views you can see that I was able to show both the walls facing Alesia and those which would protect the Roman rear. Also you can see the placement of balistae both on the walls and between them.
