Alesia: 52 B.C. - page 9 of 12 Alesia: 52 B.C. Western Siege Works It was from the west that the Gauls attempted to break through to the town as mentioned. The works facing Alesia required a greater amount of care. It was essential that the Gauls inside the town could not break through to join up with the relief force. There were two places that the assaults from the relief force hoped to have success. This was the broken ground which prevented the Romans from creating a truly uninterrupted siege lines. On the north section of the siege lines were posted camps for two legions. Caesar's main camp or headquarters was in the south along with siege works facing Alesia. I decided that this was too much to do in the scenario. So Caesar's camp will be off board. Perhaps I will construct this area at a later date. So for now it is not included in the scenario. Now back to the western works. I focused the scenario on the broken ground in the north west between the wall s facing Alesia and the western defenses. Here I have filled the broken ground with a cavalry camp. This I will show later, just follow the links. The western fortifications are shaped like a half moon. The side facing Alesia is the strongest. In the center is the deepest amount of obstacles. This area with the various goads, pot holes, brush, towers and walls. This was a true killing zone. The flanking areas are less well defended. The north west end of these works also have a gate way facing the opposite side - away from Alesia. In this way units could make a sortie out. There is a similar gate way on the south west end of the works. Both are easily defended. I will discuss the specifics of these at the end of the pages along with the QRS. Take note that Romans did not hang gates in the gateways. Instead they would place units there. There are also small defenses in front of the gateways. These tumuli would reappear in military architecture centuries later. They break the attack by the enemy or at worse slow them down. Just click on the photo to make it larger. Then hit the return or back button.
