Po Valley Celts vs. Romans - page 3 of 4 The Battle
The Latin light cavalry evades enemy citizen cavalry and is also shadowed by Numidians as the noble cavalry and Latin and Roman cavalry reach the flat surface of the hill together. the phalanx and the elephants are screened by Numidians as they advance, Roman Velites moving forward to screen the legion. The Celts emerge from the wood and are faced by Velites as the Latin legion achieves correct deployment ready to face them. Javelins fly to little effect, some Latin lights succumb to the accuracy of the Numidians, but little else occurs. The Noble cavalry charge into the Latin and Roman cavalry, its a massacre, although they take minor casualties, they rout both Roman units, almost killing the Latin's to a man. The Numidians charge the Latin lights, who foolishly counter charge, suprisingly they hold their own for a while but eventually rout as superior numbers tell. In the centre, the Numidians screening the phalanx retire to one side, under-used as the heavy infantry approach combat. The phalanx advances and the elephants charge and rout the Roman Velites, the Roman legionaries ready themselves for the forthcoming attack. The Celts from the woods charge the Latin Velites who evade, so they continue forward toward the Hastati, who counter charge, although taking heavy casualties from the superior numbers of the foe, inflict terrible loses upon the Celts, 2 units of whom rout, the chieftain's unit however, stays. The Celtic cavalry charges into the flanks of the remaining Oscans, routing them without taking a casualty! The other Oscans, caught by the fanatics are killed in their tracks. The Triarii charge the 3 Celtic units, an although outnumbered and again taking heavy casualties, bloody the nose of 2 Celtic units who fall back, and rout the remaining one, the Triarii, veterans all, take the deaths of their comrades in their stride and prepare to charge again. |
