Alesia: 52 B.C. - page 11 of 12

Here I have created PDF's for playing the Alesia Scenario Game I will be putting on at Cold Wars 2010.

You can download the PDF for The Gauls: Alesia. I should mention several things about the Gauls. When crossing obstacles like stimuli, pot holes and brambles each unit will be treated as they are recieving enemy fire from 5 figures with a factor of 5. {Thank you Frank}. This is done for each obstacle crossed. I have increased the Gallic morale to help put. Some Gallic units will carry matting wicker which they can throw down on the obstacles as they cross them. This will effectively remove the obstacles. To fill a ditch the unit will roll a single D-10 die. If any even number is rolled the ditch is filled.

The Gauls inside Alesia will have the objective of crossing all the obstacles to get to the walls. Then they will have to put up ladders which I will supply. The units climbing the ladders will count as 5 figures just as usual. The Gauls should attempt to make lanes with the wicker mattes in order to cross the obstacles. Units carrying mattes will count as in cover.Ok Phil what do you mean as usual? Where the heck is that written? Well it's not. My answer is, Well it is not; I made it up for this scenario..

In regard to simplicity I am making all Gallic foot units 9 figure units. This is to make play go faster as the factors will be pretty much the same. I have adjusted their morale for the obvious casualties they will take. Now when fighting Romans I am giving them an extra plus one for facing Romans which are mounted 4 FPS (figures per stand). I have really come to like the figures per stand idea.

Lets turn to Gallic movement. When coming out of Alesia each Gallic command will have to roll a D-10 die. The resulting roll will be added to their normal movement. Move the entire command. When attempting to move commands which are in column they may pass through each other. So some will move quickly and others will move slowly. They will use this method of moving until they are within 8 inches of Roman fortifications they resume normal movement without the aid of the D-10. Each command will have a designated wall area as its objective. Only the Gallic commanders and the GMs will know that objective.

You can also download the PDF for The Romans: Alesia. I should mention several things about the Romans. The Romans are mounted on stand either 3 or 4 FPS (figures per stand). Please note the 4 figures per stand are actually half stands of 2 figures. When placed one behind the other or side by side they are 4 FPS. I do this with Caesar's Romans in order to give them greater tactical advantages. The Romans mounted 3 FPS are mounted in this fashion to show how Caesar would have his men deploy to appear as if their numbers were greater than they really were. Their power is still that of HI in close order. It's in the Commentaries in the Book Year 52. The Gauls do get a bonus 1 for facing Romans not 4 FPS. Also there is a difference in movement; shown as 3/4 and 5/4. This means 3 FPS move at 5 inches and 4FPS move at 4 inches.

The Roman QRS shows Auxilia. These are all units which are not from the legions. In other words those who are not Romans. Also the Romans have two types of balista. Scorpions (which are light) and heavier balista which have a better base shooting factor. Both shot as 5 figures per machine. Lets look at figures in a tower. I will use individual figures which will represent 6 figures each. We will place a D-6 behind each one to show casualties. Remember this is a game and to have made the towers larger would have made the necessity for a larger set up. So that's the best I could think up too keep things manageable. Roman units will be arrayed by legions (some big some small). There will be a little over ten legions. Some of the legions or parts there of will be mounted in loose order and some or all in close order. Each legion has a unit of foot Auxilia and a unit of mounted Auxilia.

Like the Gauls, the Romans will force march by using the additional roll of a D-10 to their normal movement. The balistae are in fixed positions and cannot move. The Roman foot units will be able to reconstitute their cohorts of 8 and 6 figures when excessive casualties are inflicted on them. To do this they must be within 4 inches of other cohorts who have also taken casualties. Extra figures are placed in reserve until required.

I know I probably have forgotten something so forgive me for that and to quote Dr. Brown from Back to the Future said, Forgive the crudeness of my model Marty.
