Battle for the West: Poitiers/Tours 25 Oct. AD 732 - page 3 of 3 Here is Richard's After Action Report The battle was close and well-fought on both sides (with good tactics and good die rolling). It was essentially a draw on a tactical level, although the invaders might have won a very narrow tactical victory, but were in no position to continue their advance on Tours. The invaders deployed their footsoldiers a single battle line, with Visigoths on the left, Arabs in the center, and Berbers on the right. Both flanks were covered by cavalry (Visigoths and Basques on the left and Arabs on the right) and screen of excellant archers were deployed in front. The Franks also deployed in a single line, with archers in front and cavalry on both flanks. Both sides advanced their cavalry early in the fight and the Franks were able to to gain the advantage on both flanks after a couple of rounds of fighting. In what was the most heroic moment in the fight, Charles Martel's son Karloman (played by Colonial Campaign designer Mark Fastoso) and his small bodyguard were able to rout 120 Arab light horsemen on the Frankish left flank with back to back "1's" in a heated melee. Unfortunately for the Franks, however, they were not able to convert their advantage in the cavalry skirmishes into anything more substantial. The invaders decided not to test the Frankish infantry and were content to hide behind their skirmishers, forcing the Franks to advance. In fact, Dr. John Manning (author of A to Z Rules for Ancients) wheeled his Visigothic infnantry backward to avoid a massive Frankish assault. Nothwithstanding being outnumbered and outclassed, the Visigoths were able to hold (though just barely, and only because time expired). In the center, the Arab archers were able to clear away their Frankish opposites and peppered the Frankish battle line. This caused enough casualties to allow the Arab infantry to punch a hole in Frankish center, sending Charles Martel to the rear with a non-fatal wound (the Arab Emir of Spain was also wounded in a melee in the center). On the invader's right, however, the Franks smashed into the Berber footsoldiers. The Berbers' lack of armor proved fatal and the Franks cut through them with relative ease. All-in-all it was a fun evening of wargaming and a rematch is in the works for Cold Wars '08. |
