Just Gotta WheelFlank Charge by Wheelingby Phil Viverito Here we have a unit that just has to charge, even though it goes against everything sane. But then, battle is insane. The Allied commander of the hastati has ordered his maniples to wheel for a charge on the enemy facing thier Roman brothers to their right. Dumb, considering that this will present a flank to the enemy.
Wheeling to charge for most heavy infantry will take two turns to accomplish because they cannot simply go fast enough. So here the Romans will stop on the Spanish unit's flank (blue line). The does put them at the top of the next turn direclty on the enemy's unshielded flank. (In Second Edition normal wheeling reduces movement of close order units by half and is considered an evolution.) Here is an estimate of the situation: The Romans already in melee {A} can hold the Spanish to their front and not exchange lines with the princeps to their rear, giving the wheelers {C} a good enemy flank. Or, they could break off. This might move everyone out of the charge reach of the wheeling unit. However, with 22-1/2 degrees of facing for the wheelers they would still be able to charge flank or rear, as the Spanish collide with B princeps (yellow). Let's say the Roman hastati {A} decide to hold and not break off. At the top of next turn the wheeling unit can declare a charge on the meleeing Spanish who would now face enemy flank and rear. The Spanish may break off and run with backs to the enemy hoping to outdistance the new chargers (red line). Or, they might fight it out with both Roman units.
