Charging DiagonallyAn Illustrated Exampleby Phil Viverito Q: In the charge, there are times when the charger is facing his objective enemy unit diagonally. Can he still charge, and if so how do the units line up for melee? A: Here is a photo of just that, where we have a Spanish tribal unit charging a Roman unit.
The Romans will receive the charge standing. The Spanish are in normal move of 6 inches so they may charge as pictured below. The Spanish can make this charge because they are facing the enemy and the enemy are with 6 inches of the Spanish movement.
Here you can see how the two opposing units lined up at contact. The stands are lined up as evenly as possible. Notice the Romans have an overlap of 1/2 stand. The Romans are in good position here. They have support on their left and to their rear. Fighting in one line means that they fight every figure in melee. The white arrow shows their overlap. Now it's up to the basic factors, modifiers and the dice. |
