Using Tribals In Classical Hack - page 2 of 7

Romans

roman setup

Here is the Roman deployment. I played the Romans as they could be a little more difficult to use than the wild Celts.

The Roman set up is somewhat similar to that of the tribals with infantry in the center and cavalry on the wings.

Unlike the Celts the Romans have three lines in a deployment called acies triplex (three lines). The infantry are divided into ten cohorts or regiments of about three and sixty men each, The front first two lines are made up of three cohorts each. The remaining four cohorts compose the third line. To support the center the Romans would place balistae or scorpions on high ground behind the lines or on the flanks. In tis case I elected to place them on each wing.

The Roman cavalry on the left (top of the photo) are noble Gallic cavalry allied to Rome. On the right are the savage and feared by all German cavalry and infantry. The Romans at this time, circa 52 B.C., had no real Roman cavalry. Instead the Romans hired or enlisted allies for their cavalry arm. In addition to this would be the missile or skirmisher units. All would be tribal or non-Roman at best.

To sum up then we have a single roman legion deployed in three lines with cavalry on each flank and skirmishers in advance of the main battle line of foot. In support would be small field artillery pieces on elevated ground to the rear or on the flanks. A Roman legion of about thirty-six hundred Roman foot and about one thousand mounted tribal cavalry with supporting units of foot in units of about one hundred and eighty men or more).
