Caesar's Auxilia

Below is an open order stand of Numidian Light Cavalry, 2 figures per stand. After the Punic Wars the Romans relied on using foreign troop types for support or auxilia especially in regard to cavalry. The old Roman equites (cavalry) were of two kinds ordinary which were attached to the legions (about 120 men as a single unit) and extraordinary (those outside of the ordinary) cavalry units from Allied cities. Through out most of Roman history and into the Late Empire the Romans counted more and more on mobile cavalry units. Numidians were used from the post Punic War period until the end of the eEmpire.



Below is an example of a typical unit of open order Numidian cavalry. I like using cavalry in units of 4 to 12 figures.
